Recessive Pied / Danish Pied / Harlequin Pied Budgie

Recessive Pied was the first pied mutation found and established in the species, originally bred from Finnish birds in the late 1920s and early 30s. They were nearly wiped out during World War II, but recovered and became one of the most common mutations available today.

Budgies with Recessive Pied are easily identifiable due to their overwhelmingly yellow color, few dark markings, mixed blue and white cheek patches, and patches of green on the belly & rump. The eyes are fully black, the bill is orange, and the feet are pink. Like Lutino and fallow, the ceres of young females and adult males lack blue entirely. Instead, young females tend to have paler pink ceres while males have more vibrant pink ones.

Interestingly, some birds that have only one Recessive Pied gene, called Splits, can have a very small patch of yellow on the back of their head. Some splits are also said to have fully black eyes even as adults.

Clear-flight Pied and Recessive Pied can be combined to form a Black-eyed Clear, an uncommon combination that completely lacks any melanin in its feathers. Their fully black eyes set them apart from DF Spangle and Lutino, which both have white iris rings. Just like Recessive Pieds, Black-eyed Clears have orange bills, pink feet, and lack any blue in their ceres.
