Another very rare mutation in Maroon-bellied Conures, true Blue results in an azure-colored bird with silver ears, gray collar feathers with light gray borders, and a blue-gray tail. Though similar to Turquoise Green-cheeked Conures, they lack any hint of yellow, green, or pink color. However, given the absence of true Blue in Green-cheeks, it is somewhat surprisingly that the two have not been hybridized in order to transfer the gene. Given that Blue is recessive, though, such a project would take significant time and energy to achieve.
Some of the first Blue Maroon-bellied Conures were observed in the wild before they were bred in captivity. One specimen in the São Paulo Museum dates back to 1970.
