?? Painted Conure x ??

Sold at a flea market as a Green-cheeked Conure, the pictured bird is clearly a hybrid between different Pyrrhura conures. It is mostly green with a black cap and bill, bluish crown, faded maroon mask, faded white ears, and obvious diamond-shaped collar feathers that round out towards the chest. The belly and rump are a deep red while the shoulders and underwings show hints of bright red. The tail is green with maroon color appearing closer to the tip.

It seems likely that one parent was a Painted Conure; Many of the bird’s markings match with the species, and Painted Conures were known to be sold in the region where it was found. The other parent may have been a Pearly Conure given its red underwings and somewhat blue cheeks, though its faded white ears may indicate a Crimson-bellied Conure instead. It’s equally possible that its other parent was itself a hybrid. Unfortunately, we will never know the truth unless the bird’s breeder comes forward.
