Red factor is a common yet valuable mutation that was discovered by Hawaiian breeders in 1990. Sun Conures of this variety have more red plumage than normal, though intensity ranges strongly from bird to bird. However, individuals with stronger red color are more likely to have similarly-colored offspring.
Breeding two Red Factors together may result in a variety known as a “Bronze Factor” or “DF Red Factor”. These birds have intense red coloration with noticeably brown wing and tail feathers. Though they appear healthy at first, Bronze Factor chicks begin to experience neurological issues and organ failure that intensify by the time they wean. They are unable to control their movements, which makes eating, perching, and related behaviors extremely difficult or impossible (video). No matter what they are fed, how they are cared for, or how healthy their genes are, Bronze Factors always die within 1-2 months of becoming symptomatic. To avoid producing them, breeders should never pair Red Factors together or allow them to breed in a colony setup.
Please contact me if you are an owner of a Bronze Factor Sun Conure in the US. Research is currently being performed on Bronzes in relation to Sjögren-Larsson Syndrome (SLS).
