Lutino is a very uncommon recessive mutation that looks quite similar to the Sun Cheek combination in Green-cheeked Conures (Dilute + Cinnamon + Yellow-sided). They are bright yellow with a white hood, yellow cheeks, and a red belly, eyes, and tail. The feet and bill are fully pink.
While NSL Lutino is often believed to have been discovered in pure Green-cheeks, it’s fully possible that it came from hybridization with Maroon-bellied Conures: a species which has had the Lutino mutation for much longer.
Lutino is sometimes combined with the Turquoise mutation, resulting in a paler bird called a Creamino. Creaminos are a lighter shade of yellow than their Lutino counterparts and have orange belly & tail feathers instead.
While NSL Lutino was discovered in Belgium, a separate sex-linked recessive form was discovered in 2019 by breeders from the United States. This latter variety is far rarer than its autosomal recessive counterpart.
